This case study outlines the successful conversion of a storage basement in a red brick Victorian terraced house in Dukinfield. The project was aimed at maximizing usable space.
Client Objectives:
The homeowners sought to convert their dark and cramped basement into a practical storage area. Their primary concerns included:

Scope of work
Lowering the Existing Floor Slab:
- The first step in the conversion was lowering the existing concrete floor slab. This involved careful excavation to remove several inches of soil from the basement floor, increasing the head height to approximately 2 meters.
- Structural considerations were taken into account, and shoring techniques were employed to maintain the integrity of the house during the excavation process.
Perimeter Drainage System and Sump Pump Installation:
- To manage any potential water ingress, a perimeter drainage channel was installed around the walls of the basement. This channel captures and directs water away from the basement.
- A sump pump was installed at the lowest point of the basement to actively remove any accumulated water, minimizing the likelihood of flooding and ensuring a dry storage environment.
Insulation and Plastering:

Ventilation System:
- To combat potential dampness and improve air quality, a Flat-master 2000 heated Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) unit was installed. This system introduces warm, filtered air into the basement, thereby reducing condensation and maintaining a comfortable environment.
Electrical Installations:
- New electric points were added throughout the basement, providing adequate power outlets for lighting and electrical appliances. This enhancement was crucial for making the space more functional as a storage area.
- A radiator was installed to ensure the basement could be heated effectively, improving comfort during colder months and allowing the area to be used year-round.
Outcomes
The conversion transformed the previously dark and damp basement into a bright, airy storage space, markedly increasing its functionality.
The increase in head height not only improved accessibility but also gave the space a more open feel.
The perimeter drainage system and sump pump successfully mitigated the risk of water ingress, keeping the basement dry and secure for storage.

The work was carried out by Kane and the team who did a great job. Very curtious, tidy, and efficient. I even managed to work from home throughout the week while they were here! Left the place nice and clean afterwards too - couldn't recommend them highly enough.
